It's migration time for birds on the North Shore! Come to the Joppa Flats Education Center to learn about bird survival skills in the wild, migration patterns, the causes of migration and developing better birding skills!

Essex Heritage has 200+ events in their catalog, so we have gone through and cherry-picked some of the best events for families with children.  Grab the rain gear (just in case!) and hit some of the most unique places to go on the North Shore while learning the history and heritage of Essex County with your family!

 

Try out for the Gloucester Community Children’s Choir!

Choir auditions are open to all students, Grades 4-8, in Gloucester & Cape Ann.  The Gloucester Community Children’s Choir is directed by Jeremiah Gallant, and is a free afterschool program with open auditions for all students in Gloucester and surrounding communities.The choir is sponsored by the Gloucester Community Arts Charter School.

Kids will learn the basics of robotics in this four session LEGO workshop. It's designed as a fun and easy way to introduce students to simple robotics. Build models of machines and animals; attach sensors and motors that are plugged into a computer that will animate our creations using an innovative drag and drop software.

 

This Afterschool at Joppa Flats focuses on butterflies.

NEW! Our afternoon starts off with self-guided activities, challenges, or puzzles that lead us to our topic for the day. As a group, we'll observe, investigate, and compare wildlife, their adaptations, and the changes that they undergo in autumn. Participants may play the role of entomologist, ornithologist, astronomer, or even glaciologist throughout this series. Each experience will leave your young naturalist eager for the next session. And we always end with a tasty, thematic treat that the participants make!

 

Get outside and walk your way to feeling better! Coolidge Reservation's Ocean Lawn offers an extraordinary opportunity to get you started. This fairly flat, grassy terrain stimulates all your senses, offers fascinating views, and will ease you into walking your way to health.

 

Appleton Farms produces their own eggs with pasture raised chickens

We've all eaten eggs from the supermarket, but what about straight from a farm? At this program, you'll learn about Appleton Farms' pasture-raised laying chickens. You'll get to see our chicken "tractor" and learn how use pasture rotation to produce our delicious, farm-fresh eggs. They're not like anything you'll find at the supermarket!

Appleton Farm Fiddleheads is a farm program designed for kids aged 3-5

Explore the rhythms of Appleton Farms. Meet the cows, harvest the fields, wander the woods and dig in to farm chores. Fiddleheads experience it all through age-appropriate sensory activities, stories, songs and games. A healthy snack is provided.

Veasey Park boasts 47 Acres in Groveland with water frontage.

This guided tour will explore some of Groveland's 47 acres of conservation land, highlighting Veasey Park's Nesting Box Program. We will explore and compare inhabitants including bluebirds, tree swallows, purple martins, tufted tit mouse and bobolinks. This serene walk is a perfect place for observing and learning about our local birds and their natural environment. Binoculars suggested.

Join watercolorist Brenda Sloane in a monthly program that combines nature and art. We will start with a walk on the sanctuary to observe the topic of the month. We will then return to the Nature Center to create a follow-up work of art.

Family events for north shore children in Ipswich

The Ipswich Cultural Council's 25th Annual Ipswich Art Show and Sale will be a weekend long event showcasing works by Ipswich Artists - 100 Artists estimated to participate! Works on display will be of many mediums including sculpture, painting, photography, textiles, jewelry, wood art and pottery. Live Music will be part of the elegant reception Friday evening featuring chamber ensemble from the Orchestra on the Hill. Saturday evening enjoy a special silent auction, poetry readings, live music and a walk across the river after dark to observe the magic of Ipswich Illuminated. Sunday relax and enjoy Brunch on the River with live music and artist vendors.

Take this free guided tour of the Peabody Essex Museum's exhibit, "Painting the American Vision." In the mid-1800s, a loosely knit group of American painters (now known as the Hudson River School) forged an "American" landscape that regarded the natural world as a resource for spiritual renewal and an expression of cultural and national identity.

 

The mid 19th century Acorn Block Press at the Sarah Elizabeth Shop!

Long before desktop publishing and every home having their own printer, printed items were made using bulky printing machines called block printers.  Come see a demonstration of a block press in action at the Sarah Elizabeth Shop in Rockport. The antique Acorn press was made by the Adams brothers of Boston between 1830 to 1870.

 

Butterfly and water fowl migration is explained on this docent led tour

Come enjoy a hike at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield, one of Mass Audubon's largest sanctuaries. Visitors will have the opportunity to enhance their hike by visiting naturalist-docents on the sanctuary trails. Beginning at 9:30AM, docents will be stationed at a wildlife observation tower overlooking a freshwater marsh and alongside a beautiful fall field. Visit them to learn about the fall migration of monarch butterflies, and the needs of migrating waterfowl.

 

Celebrate this Season's Harvest in the Village Marketplace, Hamilton & Wenham

Celebrate the Harvest Season with a traditional open air market day! Local farmers, craft vendors, entertainment and food choices are all available to enjoy the change of the seasons and the bountiful harvest that we are blessed with this year. The Village Marketplace will be decorated for the crisp season with flowers, pumpkins and cornstalks. This autumnal street fair will be at 300 Main St. Wenham and adjacent Railroad Avenue in Hamilton.

 

Visit Lowell's Boat Shop as part of Essex Heritage Commsions Trails and Sails

Visit Lowell’s Boat Shop, the birthplace of the legendary fishing Dory as part of the TRAILS & SAILS two weekend event. Founded by Simeon Lowell in 1793, the boat shop designed and produced some of the finest small fishing vessels used by American mariners. The shop is a "working museum" where visitors can see boats under construction.
