March is the time for sugaring in New England! Appleton keeps this very special tradition alive by tapping the farms beautiful maple trees and producing wood-fired, small batch syrup. We will begin the workshop by enjoying a leisurely walk around the farmstead to show you how sap is harvest and collected. We will make sure to stop along the way and visit our very own sugar shack.
Warm up in our cozy farm kitchen learning how to make country bread and delicious soups and stews. These hearty recipes will become favorites in your winter collection. A satisfying meal together will be enjoyed by all at the evening’s end!
Jackie King, co-owner of A&J King Artisan Bakers in Salem, will show you the basics of tart production and assembly using three distinct methods. Based on the recipes and techniques outlined in her new book, Baking by Hand, participants will create three tarts from start to finish—to bring home or eat right away! This class is perfect for the aspiring pastry chef, sweet lover, or home cook. Join us for this inspiring workshop, then stop by the Appleton Farms Dairy Store to pick up your own copy of Baking by Hand.
Mimi's Italian Cookies & More will be hosting a “Fancy Nancy Tea Party”. Have the little ones dress in party dresses, tiaras, and anything fancy and come listen to librarian/ multi media specialist/ storyteller, Chris Brownell, from western Ma. read from this popular story collection. The first part of the workshop will include a leisurely walk around the farmstead to show how sap is harvested and collected. The tour will wrap up at our sugar shack so you can see (and smell!) the transformation of sap to syrup. You'll gather in the farm kitchen for the second part of the workshop, where chef Carolyn Grieco will teach how to make some of the most delectable maple syrup recipes. Workshop ends with a generous sampling of all our delicious maple dishes!
Spend a cozy evening with your sweetheart on the farm cooking up a delicious meal. Professional chef-instructor Carolyn Grieco will lead the class through the making of an intimate multi-course dinner in the state-of-the-art farm kitchen. Culinary tips and techniques will be covered as we prepare our dinner followed by a relaxing meal in the farmhouse dining room. Printed recipe booklet and indulgent chocolate take-treats to savor later! BYOB wine, champagne and beer is allowed.
Kids aged 10 and up are invited to take part in the the Salem Library's Cupcake Challenge! This competition ecnourages kids to create and decorate the ost beautiful, delicious and hilarously weird cupcake they can. Register by phone (978-744-9667) or in person in the Children's Room.
