Essex National Heritage Area sites offer over 150 free family fun events over two weekends each September for the annual celebration of TRAILS & SAILS. Participants can hike, bike, paddle, stroll or sail through the region and Essex National Heritage Area will provide a passport to fun and adventure. Learn why we have seasons, and why different cultures around the world created legends and rituals to mark the longest night of the year. Join us for a festival of light to beckon the sun to return!
Join us at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum as Susie Talbot guides the group through decorating a 20" wreath. Susie is an extraordinarily talented individual who not only designed, but takes care of our front gardens. Amongst her many talents is decorating Holiday greens.
Kids of all ages are welcome to paint their own buoy at Cape Ann Art Haven ! Bring your inner artist and paint a buoy for use as decoration ornaments on the Gloucester Lobster Trap Buoy Tree. Buoys will be on display throughout the Holiday season, and then they'll be auctioned off in January at Art Haven's Annual Buoy Auction Fundraiser!
Come see over 100 locally and professionally made gingerbread creations on display at the historic Jeremiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead, MA during this year's Marblehead Christmas Walk. Community members, businesses, and families are building and donating dozens of gingerbread houses, boats and local buildings that will be on display and available for raffle throughout the weekend. Days and times vary so check the times!
If you can build it, you can eat it. Join us for a sweet challenge of building creations with candies, cookies, and more. Each teen will be given “building materials” and creations to make in a timed challenge. Creations will be scored by judges, with a first, second, and third place winner based on performance. For grades 6-12.
In every kind of weather, we love to head outdoors to our spectacular local habitats, so join us for one, two, or more of these nature explorations! Each one will focus on the importance of a sense of place as we explore the ecology, sights, and sounds of our natural landscape. Wildlife, local and migrating birds, collecting techniques, and environmental awareness will be presented in a fun, energetic format that adults and children alike will enjoy. This session is a coastal forest stroll with a discovery session in the marsh.

Join Artist and Art Teacher Mary Ann McCurdle for one or more of these new family art classes this fall. Each class will begin with a short story, followed by a nature walk, and finish up with a related art project as we celebrate the beauty of the season.
