Earth Day Coastal Clean Up on Cape Ann

Earthday for shoreline cleanups at Halibut Point and Coolidge Point Reservation!

The Trustees of Reservations invites you and your kids to come out to two of their most spectacular coastal reservations to help us celebrate Earth Day 2013. Take this opportunity to teach your children the benefits of stewardship and to have a great time as a family.  At Halibut Point State Park and/or the Coolidge Point Reservation, your help is needed cleaning up shoreline, building a bird box or a boardwalk, or simply drinking in the beauty of our special places. Call for details. Please register in advance!

Winter Birds Free-for-All

Woodpeckers winter over in Massachusetts' North Shore.

Joppa Flats Education Center invites families to join them for a full day of free outdoor and indoor nature activities, art projects, and birding! While some songbirds have left for a warmer climate, our resident winter birds are happily preparing for the cold and the snow.

CoastSweep: Rockport

Some coastal trash is accidental like this lobster pot washed up by a storm.

As part of Coastsweep 2012, volunteers are encouraged to come to Back Beach or Front Beach to help in the statewide effort to keep our coastline clean. Trash collected will be measured and analyzed, and the data will be sent to Washington DC to aid the government in creating legislation to minimize trash in our oceans! These specific beach cleanups are coordinated by Renee Waller.

CoastSweep: Plum Island

CoastSweep will be targeting Plum Island for two days in September 2012

As part of Coastsweep 2012, Joppa Flats Education Center and Parker River National Wildlife Refuge encourage volunteers to come to Plum Island and help in the statewide effort to keep our coastline clean. COASTSWEEP is the annual statewide cleanup of Massachusetts coastal and riverine environments. Over more than 20 years, COASTSWEEP has engaged thousands of volunteers in cleaning hundreds of miles of shoreline and riverbanks.

This is a whale watch with a birding twist! Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center has teamed up with Newburyport Whale Watch, to create this birding whale watch. This program focuses on seabirds, but we plan on seeing and learning about marine mammals as well.

CoastSweep: Crane Beach

Crane Beach is huge and can handle as many volunteers as possible for CoastSweep

As part of Coastsweep 2012, volunteers are encouraged to come to Crane Beach on the Crane Estate to help in the statewide effort to keep our coastline clean. We’ll begin the morning by picking up the beach after a busy summer and we’ll end the morning tallying our efforts.  If you come to help out, please feel free to stay for a complimentary lunch!

Seabirds and Whales Monday Cruise

Learn about sea birds while whale watching aboard the Prince of Whales!

This is a whale watch with a birding twist! Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center has teamed up with Newburyport Whale Watch, to create this birding whale watch. This program focuses on seabirds, but we plan on seeing and learning about marine mammals as well. Onboard the Prince of Whales, we will look for concentrations of birds such as storm-petrels, shearwaters, gannets, jaegers, terns, and phalaropes. Dave Larson from the Joppa Flats Education Center will join the Prince of Whales marine mammal naturalists onboard to help spot and narrate bird sightings.

Climate Change and the Newburyport Family

Come learn about climate change and how it affects coastal towns

Everyone is talking about climate change these days. How is that conversation going around your family's dinner table? Our students are all running around with some facts and probably some misconceptions. Perhaps the adults are in the same position.

Upcycled Journal Workshop for Teens at NPL

Creating art with recyucled materials is good for people and the planet!

Teens in grades 7 through 12 are invited to recycle with style in the program room at Newburyport Public Library. Local artist Pam Farren will teach us how to create upcycled journals using cardboard boxes (e.g. cereal boxes), paper, ribbon, string, and other fasteners. Butterflies & Blossoms Free-for-All

Joppa Flats will have Free indoor and outdoor activities for kids and families!

Joppa Flats Education Center invites families to join them for a full day of free outdoor and indoor nature activities, art projects, and live insects! August is the time to see such winged wonders as American ladies, swallowtails, monarchs, skippers, and more. At Joppa Flats, you'll see wild butterflies and captive caterpillars, learn about environmentally friendly products and practices for the home and garden, enjoy a guided nature walk on the grounds, and take home a fun craft or two.
