Its time! The cows are heading back out to the pasture for the season. Yay! Its an exciting spectacle as the cows will jump and run with joy as they get to graze for the first time this year.
Take a step back in time and enjoy a spring day on the farm. Enjoy traditional New England music, sheep-shearing, and wagon rides and cheer on your favorite teams of the Essex Base Ball Association as they play using 1860s rules. At these fun, historically accurate games, players pitch underhand, a ball bounced once and caught is an out, and no gloves are allowed.
Join The Trustees of Reservations at the farm to celebrate Mother’s Day! Treat Mom to a memorable farm to table Mothers Day Brunch at the farm. Enjoy a hearty buffet brunch with locally sourced in ingredients created by the amazing Chive Events in our historic carriage barn . If the weather is nice, enjoy additional seating and lawn games in our stone paddock. Mom's receive a well deserved mimosa with brunch (more available for purchase)! Kids can visit with our barnyard animals and make a craft for mom!
Appleton farms is launching a NEW afterschool cooking class for kids ages 8-12. Do you have a future chef on your hands or kid that loves taste testing with new recipes? We will get our hands dirty both out on the farm and in the kitchen! Each week we will use locally sourced ingredients, some of which we may harvest ourselves, to craft 2 delicious recipes. We will discuss topics like seasonality, following recipes, proper measuring and knife skills. Cooking experience is certainly not required, but a love off food is recommended!
The farm is coming alive in April and there is so much to do! Dig into vacation at Appleton Farms and become a farmer for a day (or 5)! You’ll get to help care for our animals, learn to grow and eat farm fresh food, create natural crafts, and explore the farm as it wakes up to spring! Your little farmers will come home with stories of adventure, a deeper understanding of where their food comes from, a sense of responsibility, and memories made with new friends.
Come fly a kite at Cogswell's Grant! Bring your own kite or build one of your own, and watch professional kite flyers from Kites Over New England. Archie Stewart of Kite Education teaches a workshop with all materials included, where kids and adults can make their own kites and learn how to fly them.
Trees and branches decorated with eggs, feathers, and ornaments, called Easter Trees, are part of both German and Swedish traditions and make a whimsical, festive decoration for your spring table. Create your own interpretation of the Easter Tree with natural branches and a variety of hand-crafted ornaments. Bring the whole family along - there will be plenty of opportunities for small hands to get involved in creating your Easter Tree tradition!
No fancy pastry here, this workshop embraces the nostalgia of old-fashioned country-style baking here in New England! We'll roll up our sleeves to prepare delicious sweet and savory recipes while learning fundamental measuring and baking principles, along with and proper methods and techniques for quick breads, filled cookies, yeast bread, and seasonal specialty fruit desserts.
