Essex National Heritage Area sites offer over 150 free family fun events over two weekends each September for the annual celebration of TRAILS & SAILS. Participants can hike, bike, paddle, stroll or sail through the region and Essex National Heritage Area will provide a passport to fun and adventure. Join the Salem Maritime National Historic Site for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Friendship of Salem with Captain Jeremy Bumagin, Rigger John Newman and ship volunteers. Participants can see and visit areas of the ship typically not open to the public, as well as learn about numerous ongoing maintenance projects.
Join The Trustees of Reservations on a misty evening in early Spring, vernal pools are hopping! The swales we find tucked amongst the dunes are coming alive, host to a variety of creatures waking from a long winter’s nap and ready for action! We’ll hike out under cover of darkness to spy on – and listen to – this celebration of awakening. Bring a flashlight or headlamp, and wear boots! We’ll have nets and buckets for up-close observations, but our specimen collecting is strictly catch-and-release.

On this, the shortest day of the year, we'll take advantage of the dark with a stroll beneath the stars. We'll warm up after our walk with hot cider and refreshments in the Tavern at the Inn at Castle Hill. The perfect balance to counteract the bustle of the holiday season!

Join The Trustees of Reservations on an exploration of the dunes at the Crane Wildlife Refuge in ipswich! This hike explores the wild wonders of the dune trails through the Crane Wildlife Refuge, from the Crane Beach parking area to Essex Point and back again! We'll launch our long walk at the dunes trailhead, and make our way along the backside of Crane Beach, then tuck into the dunes again to reach Essex Point. A bag lunch prepared by Ferreira Foods of Salem will be delivered to us at the approximate halfway point. Come prepared for a leisurely long-way-around walk of about 8 miles!
