Star Party with the NSAAC

Join the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club in a Star party at iFarm in Boxford!

Join the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club (NSAAC) at ifarm to experience the wonders of the night sky. NSAAC members will be present with a number of telescopes for attendees to use. The telescopes will be set to observe different phenomena in the night sky. Before the viewing, an NSAAC astronomer will give a short presentation on the different marvels you will see that evening. Possible selections include double star systems, globular clusters (collections of hundreds of thousands of stars that orbit our galaxy), and nebula (exploded stars as well as star-forming regions).

Fall Family Monarch Conservation Program & Butterfly Tagging!

Come to Parker River Wildlife Sanctuary to learn about Monarch Butterflies!

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge invites families to join Katie Hone, The Monarch Gardener, for this fun and interesting one hour program about the monarch butterfly.  The program will include a presentation about monarchs with interactive role playing and live animals AND making milkweed “seed bombs” (to take home).  Meet, tag and release live monarch butterflies to the wild! This program is geared to younger children and their parents.  This program will take place in the refuge visitor center classroom.  NO preregistration for this program.

Invertebrates of the Field and Forest

Families will learn about invertabrates of the North Shore with North Shore Nature Programs

North Shore Nature Programs is happy to be participating in our first ever Trails and Sails event! Join experienced naturalists Andrew and Dan on a guided hike through Camp Denison’s fields and forests. Your family can expect to see katydids, dragonfly’s, centipedes, millipedes, and sow bugs! Each family will have the opportunity to touch and hold as many invertebrates as they please! You will also learn about the amazing adaptations these creatures require to live in the wild.

Marine Science Experience

Tour Salem State's Cat Cove Marine Lab for Trails and Sails! FREE!

Come tour the Cat Cove Marine Laboratory as part of Trails & Sails 2019! The Cat Cove Marine Laboratory is operated by Salem State University to promote the sustainable use of aquatic resources on the North Shore and elsewhere. Massachusetts’ North Shore is historically, culturally and economically linked with the ocean. More recently, the ecological importance of coastal waters has been recognized. Salem State University and its Cat Cove Marine Laboratory acknowledge the traditional, biological and social importance of our coastal waters. Methods to preserve, manage and utilize this treasured resource are developed and disseminated at the Laboratory. Participants in Trails & Sails will tour the Laboratory, learn about its relevance and gain insight into how some of their tax dollars are being spent. The visit is interactive, be prepared to feed fish, shellfish and to handle creepy crawlers!

Stargazing at Mendel Observatory

Come to Mendel Observatory for stargazing sessions every Wednesday night.

The Observatory, with the support of volunteers from the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club, hosts public stargazing every Wednesday night (weather permitting) starting at dusk or 7 p.m., whichever is later.  When special astronomical events of interest occur (total lunar eclipses, etc.) the Observatory often holds special viewing times.  Check the Observatory Status Page before coming as it will state whether observatory is open for the evening.

Monarch Magic

Come to Endicott Wildlife Sanctuary to learn about Monarch Butterflies!

Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary invites families to join them at Endicott Wildlife Sanctuary to discover the amazing journey of the monarch butterfly to Mexico. Learn about the monarch life cycle and the challenges facing its habitat. Find out more about butterfly gardening and create a paper butterfly that will spend the winter with children who live near the monarch sanctuaries in the mountains of Michoacan, Mexico. We will then work together as citizen scientists to tag and release several monarchs to start their journey south.
