This week's program will focus on the habitat of the subtidal zone, a world that is ususlaly covered with water except for the very lowest part of low tide! Our afternoon starts off with self-guided activities, challenges, or puzzles that lead us to our topic for the day. As a group, we'll observe, investigate, and compare wildlife, their adaptations, and the changes that they undergo in autumn. Participants may play the role of entomologist, ornithologist, astronomer, or even glaciologist throughout this series. Each experience will leave your young naturalist eager for the next session.

Let's celebrate our beaches, tide pools, and salt marshes with a full day of fun outdoor/indoor activities! Handle live tide pool animals from our 110-gallon touch tank, go on a guided salt marsh walk, and enjoy a virtual whale watch trip.

What's the deal with fungus? Is it a plant? Is it an animal? Is it something in between? And just what do fungi do anyway? Answer all these questions and more! We will begin by learning about the function of fungi and the many different forms, colors, and habitats in which they can be found.

Come tour the Cat Cove Marine Laboratory as part of Trails & Sails 2012! The Cat Cove Marine Laboratory is operated by Salem State University to promote the sustainable use of aquatic resources on the North Shore and elsewhere. Instruction, outreach and research activities are pursued by Laboratory staff. Fish, clams and other "critters" are spawned and reared as part of instructional, restoration and enhancement efforts. Participants will observe aquatic life and will learn how these organisms are used to understand and manage aquatic resources.
