Pat Lowery Collins’ novel Daughter of Winter is based in mid-19th century Essex. This story of a twelve year old girl’s experience living on Hog Island during the winter brings together tales of the Essex landscape, the California gold rush and the Eastern Woodland Native Americans. This family program is fun for all ages and is free to the public.
Kids are invited to tthe Cape Ann Museum for two-hour "hands-on" class, where students will use a variety of artistic media to explore a central theme. During this open studio, kids will focus on the art of sculpture. This program is free and open to the public.

People will be making resolutions to improve something about themselves whether it be in mind, body or spirit, and Gloucester Uechi Karate Academy is offering an opportunity that will cover all three! Now through January 31, 2012, anybody is welcome to download their 'Holiday Pass', that includes two private lessons, two weeks of group classes and a free 'gi' (a karate training uniform).

Don't miss a special exhibit beginning with a lecture in honor of National Recycling Day. The art show will feature the work of Nina Cassel Samoiloff (read more about her HERE on Good Morning Gloucester) and the pieces she creates using elements she finds washed up on the beaches of Rockport. Her work will be on display in the NOAA Fisheries lobby weekdays from 8:00am – 4:30pm from November 15th until December 15th.

Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops are a great place for kids to have fun and learn skills necessary in professional theatre! The workshops include basic acting techniques, theatre games, improvisation, movement, vocal and physical expression, non-verbal communication after physical expression, character study, storytelling, public speaking training, and a technical theater & stagecraft component. Sawyer Free Library invites you to a reading from Inland by the author Lisa Capone. Dale Brown of the Whale Center of New England will be there as part of the presentation. Discuss this true story of a North Atlantic Humpback whale's autumn spent close to shore in Salem Sound, the people that interacted with her and her journey south that ended in her death off of the Virginia coast. Inland's skeleton is now on display at the Whale Center of New England, and has been used as a teaching aid in whale anatomy for thousands of visitors!
