Explore Amesbury Town Forest with Mass Audubon!

In every kind of weather, our favorite thing is to head outdoors to our spectacular local habitats! Each nature exploration will focus on the importance of a sense of place as we explore the ecology, sights, and sounds of our natural landscape. Wildlife, local and migrating birds, collecting techniques, and environmental awareness will be presented in a fun, energetic format that adults and children alike will enjoy. In this session, particitpants will explore the trails of Woodsom Farms with naturalists from Joppa Flats Education Center! .

Summits & Sea Creatures with Joppa Flats

Hike Mount Agamenticus in Maine with Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center during April Vacation!

Joppa Flats Education Center Camp Director Kirsten Lindquist leads an excurison to York Maine! We'll explore both a mountaintop and the ocean in one day -- it's the best of both worlds! We'll start off with a hike around and up Mount Agamenticus, which overlooks the ocean out to the Isles of Shoals on the horizon. On the mountain, our crew will keep an eye out for vernal pools and evidence of glacial history, while we all get to know flora unique to alpine ecosystems. After lunch on the summit, we'll descend to the coast at nearby Long Sands Beach and investigate the tide pools for marine life.

Youth Excursions: Eagle Rock Hike

Take a hike at ECGA's Thompson Street Reservation in Gloucester with Naturalists from the Joppa Flats Education Center

Tompson Street Reservation in Gloucester, managed by Essex County Greenbelt Association, is full of rich and diverse wildlife habitat, as well as some spectacular views of Ipswich Bay. Come on this fun, full-day hike and learn about vernal pools and forest wildlife while we explore the glacial granite summit of Eagle Rock with other adventurous young adults. Don't forget a camera -- the views should be great!

Woodcock Walk at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge

Explore Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and lear about the American Woodcock!

Each spring American woodcocks engage in one of nature’s most fascinating courtship displays. Here’s your chance to witness this “sky dance” up close and in-person! This program is appropriate for ages 8 and older. Meet the ranger on the deck of the visitor contact station at parking lot 1. Bring binoculars and a flashlight. Program is limited to 15 participants. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to the program start time.  Preregistration required.

Kids’ Nature Walk s - Explore the Refuge

Take your 3-5 year old youngster on a good old fashioned nature discovery walk. Meet at the refuge visitor center before driving together to the head of the day's trail on the refuge (no parking fee charged). For each session, a refuge volunteer will lead the children and their caregivers on a walk to explore different aspects of the refuge: beach, dune, marsh, scrub forest, cranberry bog. Come dressed for the weather. If the weather is completely unsuitable for outdoor enjoyment, then an indoor program comprised of a story, activity and craft will be held at the visitor center instead.

Kids' Story & Activity Hour

Bring your 3-5 year old youngster to the refuge visitor center for a good old-fashioned story hour.  For each session, a refuge volunteer will read a story about an animal or some other interesting aspect of nature.  The kids will then complete a related craft to take home.  Enrollment is limited to 12 children.  The parent or guardian must remain for the entire program.   Preregistration is required for this program.

Stop by as part of Joppa Flats to learn how we can all take responsibility for sustaining the natural beauty and resources of our oceans and coastline.

Living on the coast is a constant reminder of the beauty and power of the Atlantic Ocean. Isn't it interesting that our mighty seas are also fragile and need protection? Come to Joppa Flats for a full day of indoor activities and exhibits that focus on our ocean giants, such as whales, sharks, and sea turtles. Find out where our seafood comes from, examine sand and sea shells from around the world, and participate in art activities and ocean-themed games. Learn how we can all take responsibility for sustaining the natural beauty and resources of our oceans and coastline.

Bald Eagles and Bagels

Kids are invited to come learn about eagles at Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport!

The bald eagles are back along the Merrimack River, and we know where to find them! Join us at Joppa Flats, where we'll kick things off with some bagels and cream cheese while we learn about eagles and other birds of prey before we hit the road. We'll use recent sightings from our bird observation log, pass out binoculars and radios, and caravan out to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Deer Island, and Salisbury Beach State Reservation to seek out these majestic birds.
