All kinds of bugs live in our backyards. At this family fly-by kids will learn about bugs' lives, their births, their diets and their survival skills.  Join us at Joppa Flats Education Center for a magnified look into their bug sized world!

Introduction to Butterflying

Learn about butterflies and the plants that attract them at Joppa Flats!

After a short indoor introduction to some of our most common species of butterflies, we'll search local fields, meadows, and gardens to see what we can find. We'll talk about field identification, life cycles, host plants, and flight times while we learn to appreciate the delicate beauty of such wonderful creatures as American ladies, swallowtails, great spangled fritillaries, pearl crescents, monarchs, skippers, and more.

Children's Concert at NPL

Kids will enjoy this concert designed just for them at NPL

Kids are invited to Newburyport Public Library to experience a concert just for them titled "Samuel Barber's Masterpiece for Kids". Using interactive demonstration, Chuck Speicher and the Festival Quartet show what makes Barber's beloved "Adagio" (and the rest of the piece) one of the greatest masterpieces of all time.

Family Ecology Cruise: Tide Pools

This Harbor Cruise will explore the creatures that can be found in tide pools.

Lisa Hutchings Teacher-Naturalist from Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center and the crew of Newburyport Harbor Tours Inc.'s Yankee Clipper invite you and your family on an exciting exploration of the lower Merrimack River ecosystem. We'll conduct hands-on science as we collect water samples, live specimens, and plankton. We'll also look for wading birds, seals, and waterfowl. Your family will have a wonderful time exploring and learning about this vital part of the area's natural history.

Let’s Explore Nature Walk

Explore the trails of Maudslay State Park and the creatures that live there!

Join the Maudslay Park park interpreter for this free program to explore the natural resource aspects of Maudslay State Park. Using nets, critter tanks and hand lenses, we offer a different “theme” each time to explore the fascinating life that exists everywhere under our noses. Comfortable walking shoes and bug spray is recommended.

Mask Painting at NPL

Kids will paint a paper mache mask to take home as a suvenir!`

Hear a fun story and then paint and decorate a pre-made paper mache mask. Entering grades 1 and up. Sign up online at the Children's Room website or call to reserve a spot.

Ecotour of the Great Marsh

Explore the Great Marsh with Mass Audubon aboard the Yankee Clipper!

Join Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center in an ecotour cruise aboard Newburyport Harbor Tours Inc.'s Yankee Clipper through the Great Marsh. The Plum Island estuary is an incredible place to see a wide variety of wildlife, especially birds.
