Nature Art Classes at Joppa Flats: Keeping a Nature Journal

Kids will use nature as a muse to express themselves through art at Mass Audubon

Any season is a great time to notice nature's beauty and to make it come to life with amazing works of art! In the Spring series, we'll use collage and various materials to make wonderful 3-D landscapes of places we like to play in and faraway worlds we've always wondered about. In the this early Summer series, kids will learn about keeping a nature journal

Imagine, Sing, & Learn: Clams & Scud Live in the Mud

Preschoolers will learn clams & other mud creatures at Joppa Flats Center

Preschoolers join Joppa Flats Naturalists in an active, fun, program where they will learn what makes a salt marsh special, what lives in a salt marsh, how these animals find their food, and a chance to touch and hold live animals from the salt marsh! Using group games, songs, and fun interactive props, we’ll turn your preschooler into estuary enthusiasts! We’ll also make a take home craft  and enjoy a tasty salt marsh looking snack!

Summer Camp at Joppa Flats

Mass Audubon full and half day programs for kids ages 6-12 at Joppa Flats Center

Joppa Flats Summer Camp is the perfect place for youth with an interest in and curiosity about the world around them. Their weekly summer themes offer a wide range of topics – everything from oceans to birds to nature art – as well as opportunities for children to experience hands-on science, discuss reasons “why” and “how” things happen, handle live animals, explore the outdoors, and create art projects to take home. Joppa Flats programs stress environmental awareness, having fun, and learning, both indoors and out. Flats Summer Camp is the perfect place for youth ages 6 to 12 with an interest in and curiosity about the world around them.

Come see a Princess Pirate Panto at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport!

Theater in the Open is excited to welcome you back to the exciting upside-down world of Panto!   This year we hit the high seas in search of adventure, buried treasure, and maybe a dance number or two. Dust off your eye-patch and tiara: it’s time to boo the baddies and cheer on the goodies at our Princess Pirate Panto!

This Father's Day Ecology Cruise aboard the Yankee Clipper is about Tidal Pools

Join Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center in a family ecology cruise aboard Newburyport Harbor Tours Inc.'s Yankee Clipper this Father's Day! Teacher Naturalist, Lisa Hutchings will provide her expert pair of eyes to help your family find all the exciting sights and sounds of Newburyport and Plum Island as you cruise along the Merrimack River.

Firefly Foray

Come Explore Maudslay State Park on a Firefly Expedition!

Fireflys, also called lightning bugs, appear for only a few weeks in the early summer to delight us with their luminous nighttime dance and light show. During this fun evening family adventure at Maudslay, learn about the life of a firefly and take a firefly walk led by the park interpreter. Bring a net or jar to catch fireflies, and learn how you can help with firefly monitoring. Comfortable walking shoes and bug spray are recommended.  Meet at the park headquarters on 74 Curzon Mill Road.

Rhododendron's are plentiful at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport!

Maudslay State Park has one of the best shows of flower bloom in the Commonwealth. Come and join the beginning of this cycle with a look at the two varieties of trilliums that bloom at Maudslay with the park interpreter. This month, we enjoy the bloom of Lily-of-the-Valley, Ghent/Exbury Azalea, Columbine, and Ox-eye Daisy. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate warm clothes. Meet at the park headquarters at 74 Curzon Mill Rd

Ponding Adventure at Maudslay

What kid doesn’t like playing in the water? There’s many creatures that live there that we may not know about. Come join the interpreter for this interactive exploration into the pond and its many denizens. Appropriate for families with children. Wear clothes that can get wet and appropriate shoes. Biodiversity Free-For-All!

The Parker River Watershed provides habitat for a huge range of species!

Come to Joppa Flats to celebrate our incredible variety of birds, beach creatures, fish, horseshoe crabs, insects, and plants with a day of indoor and (hopefully) outdoor activities for all ages!  This full-day family event will feature an exciting mixture of indoor and outdoor activities that encourage participants to learn more about biodiversity.
