Based on a story by Hans Christian Anderson, The Curious Adventures of Mr. Wonderbird is both a surreal visual delight and an underrated entry in the history of classic animation.
Set in the palace of a King, the film tells the tale of two lovers, who flee their two dimensional existence as paintings, only to be haunted and chased by another painting of a mean-spirited King. The painted King makes it his intention not only to capture the young couple for his own nefarious purposes, but to take the place of the occupant of the palace, the real King.
Along the way, the couple is assisted by the curious Mr. Wonderbird who gleefully taunts and hurls insults at the faux King, all the while providing the film with many of its best lines and dialog.
