Winter is prime time to see harbor seals from the beach! We’ll begin at Joppa Flats Education Center, where we’ll learn about seals and safety. Then, we’ll fill our thermoses and head over to Salisbury Beach State Reservation to watch these charismatic creatures through our scopes and binoculars.
The excursion starts at the Joppa Flats Education Center located at One Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport, with a presentation in the classroom with an introduction to seals. We’ll learn about the seals and their families, why they are here, who visits this area, and what to do if you find a seal on the beach. We’ll watch a short video about a seal rescue and try a fun experiment or two!
After the class, we’ll take a restroom break, add on our warm layers, and meet in the lobby. You’ll be given driving directions to the beach and we’ll caravan in our own vehicles to Salisbury Beach State Reservation. We may spot a raptor while we are en route to the beach! The program ends at Salisbury Beach State Reservation. At the conclusion of the program at 12:30pm, families have the option of staying on the beach as long as they’d like or following our van back to Joppa Flats Education Center.
