Movement Mapping at IPL

Movement Sessions with Jenny Carlson form High Street Studios at the Ipswich Public Library in Massachusetts.

For students in grades 1 to 5.  Jenny Carlson (form High Street Studio in Ipswich) will be the instructor of a Movement mapping program which contains a STEM activity and the art of dance.  Symbols designate different dance moves and students draw and design their own choreography map!  The participants will perform the dance that they drafted on paper and then the dancers will perform each other's movement maps.  Math, science, and dance all in the same program.

Most new gardeners learn by trial and error which can be costly, frustrating, and discouraging. However, when equipped with basic information about soil, water, and plants, you can successfully bring your visions to reality. Knowing about pests and their treatment, how to design your garden, and how to factor natural elements like wind, shade, sun into this design will enhance your accomplishment and benefit the environment.

As spring takes over, it's a great time to explore green spaces with your family in the woods, on trails, and along the shore. "Miss Lisa" and her team will assist with the identification of creatures, provide small group challenges, and share our joy and knowledge about the natural world. After exploring our maple sugaring tools, use our hand drill to practice tapping a tree! We’ll go through the whole process from maple sugar tree ID to boiling sap, and we’ll be sure to play along the way. Our knowledgable educator will answer your questions so you can be a sugar maker at home. We’ll finish up with a story– and, of course, a maple syrup sample!

Join Culinary Program Manager Jess Wagoner for a unique workshop experience: Cooking with Fire. In this workshop, we will use Appleton’s outdoor wood-fired oven to create delicious dishes inspired by what is fresh off the farm. Each class will involve a hands-on experience preparing the courses of each menu, as well as demonstrations at the wood-fired oven. Crumble top, lattice top, double crust, pie art (yes, that’s a thing!) – we’ll cover it all. Participants will enjoy hands-on experience making pie dough by hand and will take home a prepped pie, ready for the oven! Class will end with a shared pie a la mode.

Local artist, storyteller and teacher Ann McCrea will help kids use modeling clay to sculpt a rabbit or coyote! CLAY♦WORKS combines the magic of storytelling with clay sculpting. The 70-minute CLAY•WORKS program teaches kids from 1st-6th grade [ages 5-11]. Sitting in a circle on the floor, Ann tells a story which evokes their interest and creativity.

The second Saturday of every month is free for families with school-aged children. Families are invited to the Activity Center to participate in art, history, and cultural activities, and explore the museum using a Seek and Find. Each month has a different theme, from exhibitions to special celebrations. With September 2013's theme 'Four Winds' families are invited to the Children's Activity Center to participate in themed art, history and cultural activities that explores the Gloucester's Rocky Neck Art Colony, its artists and sculptors. This program is free and open to the public.

Art in the Shipyard!

Kids will create art at the Essex Shipbuilding Musem each Wednesday afternoon!

See, learn, find, create! Young artists are invited to enjoy drawing, painting, print making, and sculpture using the Museum's shipyard and artifacts for inspiration. All materials are provided for projects. All ages are welcome. Those seven and younger must be accompanied by an adult. A public exhibit of the art work produced will take place at the museum. This program is supported in part by the Essex Cultural Council, a local agency, through the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
