Parent/Child Walkabouts: Tide Pool Treasure Hunt

This parent/child walkabout focuses on tidal pool creatures and habitat.

We will be exploring the tide-pools of Sandy Point to learn about the relationships between the water, plants, and animals that live in this habitat. We will learn how to search and handle a wide variety of intertidal animals including  snails, mussels, crabs, and other small invertebrates. We plan to play a game that shows what life in a tide-pool is like, sing some songs and get a little wet too!

Wildlife, local and migrating birds, collecting techniques, and environmental awareness will be presented in a fun, energetic format that adults and children alike will enjoy.

  • Not recommended for children under 3.
  • Participants should wear warm layers (it can be cool and breezy on the shore), a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and wear boots or sport sandals (closed toe) that can get wet. No flip-flops please.

Location

This program will take place at the southern end of Plum Island known as Sandy Point.  To get there, allow yourself at least 20 minutes from the entrance gate of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Upon arrival, parents should inform the refuge attendant at the gatehouse that they are taking a program with Mass Audubon at Sandy Point and there will be no vehicle fee. Follow the Refuge Road all the way to the end. PARK in the upper lot at the end of the refuge road. There are 2 small grey compost toilet houses here. If you cannot find parking, you will need to park your vehicle at the lower parking lot and walk back to the meeting place.
