North Shore Kid Stories, Events, Activities, Camps and Recipes

The second Saturday of every month is free for families with school-aged children. Families are invited to the Activity Center to participate in art, history, and cultural activities, and explore the museum using a Seek and Find. Each month has a different theme, from exhibitions to special celebrations. The theme for March 2015 is women artists of Cape Ann.

Sugaring Off tours are a fun and tasty way to learn about maple suagring at IRWS

Spring celebrations begin early at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary with the age-old tradition of maple sugaring. The warm days of late winter awaken the flow of sap in the maples, causing buds to swell and resulting in sweet-smelling billowing clouds of steam rising from the sugarhouse.

People of all ages enjoy learning about owls, and many species of owls can be found in Massachusetts year-round. Come experience the excitement of an owl prowl as we take a night hike to look and listen for barred, great horned, and eastern screech-owls. Before we head out on our nocturnal adventure, we'll learn fun owl facts in our cozy Barn through hands-on activities and a slide show. We'll end our evening with an owl-hooting lesson!

Glen Urquhart for Preschoolers

Glen Urquhart School welcomes Preschoolers this season. Children will enjoy the free Story Hour with Sharon Carter Grimes on Tuesdays for ages 2 1/2 - 5 years in the Glen Urquhart School Lower School Library. Free and open to the public. Drop-ins are welcome.

String art uses string and nails (or pins) to make geometric shapes that are actually rooted in mathmatics. The pins are pushed into a board, and the string is wrapped around each pin to form the overall design. Bring your own template (a paper printout) to pin around, or choose one of the many we’ll have on hand from hearts, skulls, letters, even the state of Massachusetts.

 

Divergent at the Manchester Public Library for teens

Teens are invited to Manchester Public Library for a shoing of Divergent (PG-13)! Grades 6-12 welcome. Bring a beverage and your pillows or blankets for comfy viewing. Popcorn will be served. Registration and permission slip required.

 

Learn First Aid basics at the Hamilton Wenham Community House!

In this course, kids will learn the basics of first aid and learn what to do if they are presented with a person who is injured, in shock, bleeding or burned. This course goes beyond just calling 911, and the information your child learns could make a critical difference if they are presented with an emergency in their daily lives! Knowledge of first aid basics is an important life skill that builds confidence as they face new and different situations as they grow. Course fee includes certification, and is a great bonus to tweens and teens who babysit for other kids.

A Musical Program for the Wee Ones (and a sampling of Irish Dance!) Join us Saturday, March 14th at 1pm when Marcus Gale and his Puppet Friends present a musical program that is most suitable for toddlers through first grade, but families with children of all ages will enjoy this show. His music is specifically crafted for young children, easy to learn, and great to sing along with!

 

The Amesbury Public Library invites families to build LEGO creations!

APL invites families to come and create with LEGOs! Come on up to the Children's Room and build anything you can imagine! We'll provide the Lego, you provide the builders! Everyone is welcome (we have some Duplo for youngers)! We'll have some challange suggestions each month, if you'd like! No registration required and drop in anytime between 2pm - 4pm. We will display any creations made in our fiction section!

 

North Shore of Boston Yarn, Knitting Crawl, Shops

It's here! - the 2015 North Shore Yarn Crawl is March 12-15. The shops are making preparations and stocking up, and getting ready for all the revelers.  They're planning deals, demos, trunk shows, guests and so much more. Mark your calendars, spread the word, start dreaming of all sorts of fiber goodness.

 

At Baby Boot Camp, moms get exercise while kids have fun!

Baby Boot Camp stroller-based fitness classes are designed specifically to help moms get fit. It takes the place of a personal trainer at a time in your life when you need one more than ever. Classes combine strength-training exercises with cardiovascular drills. Pilates, yoga and abdominal exercises help improve core strength. The stroller, resistance tubes (and even your child!) are used as an integral part of the workout. Come try it - the first class is always FREE!
