Join Joppa Flats at Mill Pond in W. Newbury to explore ponds!

In every kind of weather, our favorite thing is to head outdoors to our spectacular local habitats! Join Joppa Flats Education Center on a nature exploration that will focus on the importance of a sense of place as we explore the ecology, sights, and sounds of our natural landscape. Wildlife, local and migrating birds, collecting techniques, and environmental awareness will be presented in a fun, energetic format that adults and children alike will enjoy. This session will focus on the pond habitat, and it's importance in the ecosystem.

Morning Stroll to the Horse Bridge

Take a morning stroll through the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary!

Join us for an easy midmorning stroll through the cool back woods of the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary. Our short walk will start among towering groves of white pine, where we will search for toads and salamanders. The trail will lead us to a wildflower-filled field rich with dragonflies and butterflies. A few steps later, we will encounter an old wooden bridge that spans the Ipswich River, where we will stop for a snack and look for ducks, geese, and maybe a snapping turtle!

What is it like to live in the woods for years? Well, from 1884 to 1917, Mason A. Walton did just that - at Ravenswood. Join us as we closely observe wildlife signs and determine animal behavior - just like he did. We will walk his footsteps to the site of his cabin and share tales from his book [amazon 0548989842 inline]. Following the program, join us for a hot dog cookout!

Damsels and Dragons

Dragon Flys and Damsels flys eat a steady diet of mosquitos!

The return of summer means warmth, sun, and the return of jewel-like damselflies and dragonflies. Can you tell the difference between the two? These insects have an amazing life history and eat our least favorite flying insects, mosquitoes! We will spend the afternoon in the sanctuary's fields and wetlands catching dragonflies and observing them in their aquatic naiad stage. And by the end of the afternoon, you will know the difference between a dragon and a damsel and may even have the opportunity to hold one in your hand!
