Glen Urquhart School invites us explore the modern-day middle school landscape, how social media has changed how our children socialize and interact in and out of the classroom, and the impact social media has on our children - whether they’re active participants or not. Ozgur Akbas, a licensed family therapist, will help us to better understand what our children are facing in an online world, as well as the social-emotional implications, and will share best practices for managing social media use and helping your kids navigate the responsibility that comes with this aspect of the modern teenage world.

Poetry Ou Loud holds a semi-final competition for students in Newburyport and the surrounding area! Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest that celebrates the power of the spoken word and a mastery of public speaking skills while cultivating self-confidence and an appreciation of students’ literary heritage as they take poetry from the page to the stage. Poetry Out Loud has inspired hundreds of thousands of high school students to discover and appreciate both classic and contemporary poetry.

This event is free and open to all members of our local community. The conversation around screens and teens is taken to the next level with Screenagers Next Chapter: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience. This film that examines the science behind teen’s emotional challenges, the interplay of social media, and most importantly, what can be done in our schools and homes to help them build crucial skills to navigate stress, anxiety and depression in our digital age.
