Ahoy! Join Captain Puddle at Mud Puddle Toys in Salem on Fridays at 1 p.m. to share stories of high adventure, friendship and heroes of all sizes!!! Captain was a plundering pirate once before, but found she seemed to only pillage books, not gold. I recently had the opportunity to tour PEM's newest exhibit Santa at Salem Common and left with a whole new perception of Native Americans as individual artists in their own right. As a child and growing up I remember native art being presented more as 'craft' than art - possibly because it was not made as art, but as something to be used - a basket, a blanket, a beaded headdress, a tomahawk. PEM has changed all that with this exhibit.

Shapeshifting is a common theme in today's fiction and science fiction, but did you know this theme has been present in Native American art, dance, music and story telling for millennia?
