Join the park interpreter for a drop-in fishing program! Learn how to fish, what fish live in our ponds, and how to catch and release responsibly. Bait and a handful of rods will be provided but feel free to bring your own gear and fish with us and share your tips! No license required if fishing in this program. New this spring, the Trustee's popular Afternoon Adventures program now has a drop-in option on Wednesdays! Bring a friend, pick and choose the days you’d like to attend, or try it out for the first time. This 2.5-hour drop-off program on Wednesday afternoons provides your child with immersive, farm-based play and chores that foster social-emotional learning, wellbeing, and a love of nature. Skilled educators with a flair for fun and a knack for outdoor skills supervise your young farmers as they explore the barnyard, garden, and trails. This entirely-outdoors program uses our historic Carriage Barn (where the goats live!) for shelter in severe weather.

Need more assurance that winter is really ending? Come explore the refuge on a self-guided scavenger hunt for signs of spring. Engage all your senses (ok, not taste!), to learn more about how our resident plants, birds, frogs, and other wildlife respond to the changing seasons.
Birds flock to Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and so do the birdwatchers enjoying the sight and sounds of the many birds. If identifying the 300+ birds that visit the refuge intimidates you, come join refuge staff and Friends volunteers for a gentle introduction to birding. We will observe and learn to identify the different ducks that come through in April, as well as talk about why they come to the refuge.
Have you noticed the four mysterious, tall stone structures that dot the property? Have you wondered what they are and why they’re at Appleton Farms? They are called pinnacles and they have a fascinating history and connection to the Appleton family. Join us for a guided hike to visit all four of the pinnacles and learn about them and so much more.
Real Pirates Salem, a historical experience featuring an exhibition of real pirate treasure recovered from the shipwrecked Whydah – discovered by famed underwater archaeological explorer Barry Clifford – will open its doors on Saturday, April 9 at noon. The objects in the exhibit are from the world’s only fully authenticated pirate treasure ever discovered – including coins, jewelry, a cannon, and other weapons – retrieved from the wreck, and last touched by the hands of pirates more than 300 years ago.
