From 1884 – 1917, Mason A. Walton lived a hermit's life in Ravenswood Park. He closely observed, wrote, and drew about wildlife behaviors and published a book in 1903. As we walk in his footsteps to the site of his cabin, we'll track signs of wildlife just as Walton did. Along the way we'll share tales from his book A Hermit's Wild Friends, available from Amazon:

Meet up at the REI Tent next to the Nature Center, with REI Bike Shop Technicians and the Department of Conservation and Recreation for a FREE bike tune up and then take a ride through Bradley Palmer State Park and Willowdale Forest. Take a FREE guided tour of "Ansel Adams, At the Water's Edge" at the Peabody Essex Museum . Ansel Adams' appreciation for water was never far from the surface. He was drawn to the subject in all its forms, from rain, fog, mist and clouds to ice and snow. He also photographed water's effects in tide pools, weathered buildings and erosion patterns.

Beach Seining Demonstration

Beach seining is a scientific tool used by marine biologists and scientists.

What creatures live in Salem Harbor? Find out at this Trails and Sails beach seining demonstration at Waikiki Beach at Winter Island Maritime Park! Salem Sound Coastwatch staff and volunteers will walk a large seining net into the water and then drag it back to shore.  We'll lay it out, gather around to examine the catch and talk about what we find.

Take a full tour of beautiful Green Meadows Farm with an overview of our certified organic vegetable farming and sustainable animal program. Green Meadows Farm operates a CSA and runs a farm stand open to the public. In the Farmstand, you'll find our own seasonal vegetables plus a variety of natural and organic dry goods, local cheeses, milk, meat and fun gift items for children and adults.
