Come to Rebecca Nurse Homestead for our annual Historic Holidays event. This year's theme is "Christmas Through The Ages". Take a break from Christmas shopping and visit us for a good old-fashioned holiday celebration with reenactors from different time periods. Have a cup of mulled cider while you stroll the property listening to holiday music from across the centuries and warming up by the roaring fire. For a bit of fun, visit the dress up booth or make a pomander at our craft table.
The Essex County Greenbelt Association and the their community partners will host a FREE Earth Day celebration at the Cox Reservation in Essex, Massachusetts! This free event will celebrate the environment, and build connections to our natural world by offering family-friendly activities. The event will also showcase local non-profit organizations that share a commitment to building an environmentally sustainable community.
Miss Lisa of the Joppa Flats Education Center visits Amesbury Public Library each month for a 1 hour program focused on pre-schoolers! Participants will be engaged, excited, and learning about all kinds of things in nature. Each program is an hour long and includes hands-on activities, group role play, and fun take homes. The bald eagles are back along the Merrimack River, and we know where to find them! Join us at Joppa Flats, where we'll kick things off with some bagels and cream cheese while we learn about eagles and other birds of prey before we hit the road. We'll use recent sightings from our bird observation log, pass out binoculars and radios, and caravan out to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Deer Island, and Salisbury Beach State Reservation to seek out these majestic birds.
Step back in time to 1929 and join us for a day of family fun at Castle Hill! We're bringing play back into the Crane Estate with fun activities for the whole family through out the day.
See and learn about the fishes living in Salem Harbor as part of Trails & Sails! At this seining demonstration, Salem Sound Coastwatch staff will drag a large seining net through the water onto the beach. We’ll examine the catch and coastal scientists will talk about marine habitats and the ecology of Salem Sound.
As part of Trails & Sails, visit the Newburyport Powder House, built 1822, as it opens as a historic park and learning center. The open house will feature a militia demonstration by the Acton Minutemen and guided tours of this unique historic landmark critical to our defense. Special Instructions: Slight incline and walk to site. No toilet facilities are available on site. We will give Powder House tours before and after the militia demonstrations
The Custom House is celebrating Essex National Heritage Area’sTrails & Sails on Saturday, with a Revolutionary War Militia Muster on the back green. This reenactment event will highlight Newburyport’s role in the American Revolution. Visit our back lawn to see Captain John Wood’s Company, Colonel Gerrish’s 25th Regiment of the Massachusetts Grand Army. The group will interpret a unit that was raised in Newbury, Massachusetts in 1775, as well as Virginia riflemen who stopped in Newburyport on their way to Arnold’s Expedition to Canada.
