Come learn about, meet & handle (if you'd like!) many types of snakes, some of which are from our local area! Rick and his team share their knowledge and enthusiasm as they bring science to us in this unique & fun way! The ecology focused summer reading theme of Read, Renew, Repeat strives to bring attention to our natural world, and caring for the environment as well as the living creatures that call it home. Journey on Essex Heritage’s landing craft Naumkeag to Great Misery Island in Salem Sound. Along the way, hear stories about the rich history of the harbor and how the Misery Islands acquired their unique name. When you arrive, you’ll have 2 hours to explore the trails, open meadows, rocky shoreline, and hidden coves on the island. The Misery Islands are managed by The Trustees. Time allotted is about 3 hours round-trip (30-minute trip to and from the islands, and 2 hours on Great Misery Island). More information about the islands as well as a trail map can be found HERE

Ignite your imagination this summer at Annisquam Arts! 

Crazy Cool Collage
Clip, cut, collect, compose, and collage creative constructions and assemblages made from a variety of materials. Student creations will include wall-sized drawings, sculptures with wood and found objects, as well as a combination of printmaking, photography, and magazine collage. We will look at the mixed mediums of Robert Rauschenberg, the cutting-edge pieces by the Twentieth Century’s greatest master of collage, Kurt Schwitters, and the crazy upside-down world of Julian Schnabel as we make and manipulate an artful array of free associations.

This week, students will construct their own ornate books from cover to cover! Students will learn the art of traditional binding while experimenting to add their unique touches. We’ll use our imaginations to incorporate painting, printing, drawing, and collage techniques to make our books pop with personality.

Seed Starting & Fairy Gardens with Backyard Growers and SFL in Gloucester Massachusetts

Join Sawyer Free Library and Backyard Growers as we welcome Spring making fairy gardens and planting seeds! This children's program is free and materials will be provided for starting seeds, planting, and setting up for the fairies to take up residence! This event will take place at the Backyard Growers office, the entrance of which is located in the back parking lot area of 103 Rear Maplewood Avenue. Attendees will  plant seeds and decorate their seed trays with all the classic components of a fairy house. Use sticks, stones, moss, and more to design a garden fit for a fairy!
