Come tour the Cat Cove Marine Laboratory as part of Trails & Sails 2018! The Cat Cove Marine Laboratory is operated by Salem State University to promote the sustainable use of aquatic resources on the North Shore and elsewhere. Massachusetts’ North Shore is historically, culturally and economically linked with the ocean. More recently, the ecological importance of coastal waters has been recognized. Salem State University and its Cat Cove Marine Laboratory acknowledge the traditional, biological and social importance of our coastal waters. Methods to preserve, manage and utilize this treasured resource are developed and disseminated at the Laboratory. Participants in Trails & Sails will tour the Laboratory, learn about its relevance and gain insight into how some of their tax dollars are being spent. The visit is interactive, be prepared to feed fish, shellfish and to handle creepy crawlers!
As part of COASTSWEEP 2018, volunteers are encouraged to come to Dane Street Beach to help in the statewide effort to keep our coastline clean along the shore in Salem Massachusetts. Trash collected will be measured and analyzed, and the data will be sent to Washington DC to aid the government in creating legislation to minimize trash in our oceans! This specific cleanup is coordinated by Salem Sound Coastwatch.
Join Salem Sound Coastwatch staff and volunteers to walk the Forest River and explore a hidden gem that is right in our own back yard. Stroll along the river winding its way through salt marsh, an abundant habitat for many fish and birds. Take in the view of Salem from the top of Eagle Hill and learn about this body of water that flows into Salem Harbor. Wear shoes that can get muddy. Participants should be able to walk approximately 1 mile. Hosted by Salem Sound Coastwatch.

Come to the Salem Maritime National Historic Visitor Center to imagine what life was like at sea as you rummage through the sea bags of a ship’s boy, a sailor, and a captain. Try writing your name using signal flags used to send messages at sea. Then, make a Sailor Valentine out of sea shells like the ones sailors would create for their loved ones back home.
Learn about Salem's maritime history and view "Lady of Salem" public art through a guided walking tours of the "Ladies." This festive Beautification Committee public art project features over 15 artistically decorated ship figureheads adorning downtown Salem. Tours will focus on Salem's maritime history, the public art project, and Salem's community involvement in public art. Maps for self-guided tours and Lady of Salem photo opportunities will be available. The project is supported by a Salem Cultural Council grant.
Come Down to the 36th Annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival in Salem. See a wonderful variety of rare vintage motor yachts and sailboats. Meet skippers and crews and vote your favorite boats. Children get to make their own wee boat, and all can board real ones. There will be boat rides, crafts market, artists, old-time band music, steel drums, the Blessing of the Fleet and more! $5 donation and children under 12 are free.
