History

Lawrence is a city of art, culture and history, and what better way to continue the excitement of Labor Day Weekend in Lawrence, than with the Bread & Roses Heritage Festival? At the festival, attendees can enjoy art, history, food, and especially, music where we have three stages off all-day entertainment.  This annual festival is celebrated on Labor Day in order to honor the most significant event in Lawrence history: the 1912 Bread and Roses Strike. We memorialize the event with a variety of music and dance, poetry and drama, ethnic food, historical demonstrations, and walking and trolley tours, all on or starting from Lawrence's Common. The festival is a one-day 'open air' celebration.

The Gloucester Schooner Festival is a  wonderful celebration of Gloucester's fishing and maritime history during labor day weekend. This year's festival, hosted by Maritime Gloucester, is Gloucester’s major marine event, with participating vessels coming from ports along the Eastern seaboard and beyond. There will be both large and small vessels—ranging from 19 feet to over 100 feet in length. You will see new boats and old boats, from newly built (Ardelle - launched 2011) to over 100 years old!

Maritime Gloucester is hosting their annual Heritage Day in honor of the Gloucester Schooner Festival 2024. Step aboard a schooner, learn about traditional shipbuilding and fitting out, watch America’s oldest marine railway in action, or explore the unique biology that makes our oceans so amazing. You can find it all at Maritime Heritage Day! Maritime Gloucester will be hosting a variety of local community organizations with an exciting array of demonstrations and interactive options for all ages.

Step back in time with a visit to Lowell’s Boat Shop  in Amesbury Massachusetts during Trails & Sails! Established in 1793, LBS is the oldest continuously operating boat shop in the United States and birthplace of the legendary fishing dory. Now a working museum, the sights, smells and sounds that greet you bring to life centuries of boatbuilding as skilled craftsmen continue to build the dories and skiffs that were once the mainstay of the fishing industry in NE. Declared a National Landmark in 1990, LBS remains dedicated to perpetuating the art and craft of wooden boat building.
