Frozen Crystals at Maritime Gloucester

Kids will learn all about crystals at Maritime Gloucester.

Maritime Gloucester invites kids in grades 2-5 to a vacation week session about Wind Turbines and Sail Power - part of a week full of educational sessions during April vacation! Do you want to build a snowflake?  With salt and ice, we'll create a variety of ice sculptures using colorful frozen shapes!

Sawyer Free Library and the Cape Ann Museum invite families to a presentation on personal family history.  Learn how to use family records to research your own family and history and learn what life was like for your ancestors! Children will see examples of old-fashioned Cape Ann Samplers and family trees, and then create their very own sampler, and paint their own family tree.

Maritime Gloucester invites kids to a vacation week session where they'll make a 'Rube Goldberg' machine - part of a week full of educational sessions during February vacation! Cartoonist Rube Goldberg was known for drawing complex yet impractical machines, involving multiple steps to accomplish simple tasks.  After looking at Goldberg’s humorous comics for inspiration, students will engineer a Rube Goldberg machine.  Using marbles, Lego bricks, wooden blocks, dominoes, and much more, we’ll build and test intricate machines as we learn about energy, momentum, and engineering.

Maritime Gloucester invites kids to a vacation week session about scrimshaw and whale bones - part of a week full of educational sessions during February vacation! Did you know that humpback whales are named after patterns on their tails?  We’ll look at whale bones and learn about whale and dolphin species found in New England and beyond.  Students will also learn about sperm whales and scrimshaw by handling real whale teeth and creating their own scrimshawed candles to take home.

Snowflake Shapes & Science

Come explore snowflakes from outside and in during this hands-on workshop.

Kids are invited to Ravenswood Park to explore the wonder of snowflakes during this hands-on winter workshop. Attendees start inside to learn how to make ice crystal models and paper flakes and view the famous snowflake photographs of Wilson Bentley, who discovered that no two snowflakes are alike. Then, we'll get outside to explore the wintry landscape in person and catch some real snowflakes, if we're lucky!

Paint Your Own Buoy - Friday

Paint a buoy ornament for the Gloucester Lobster Trap Tree at Art Haven!

All ages are welcome for two days of public buoy painting at Cape Ann Art Haven ! Bring your inner artist and paint a buoy for use as decoration on the Gloucester Lobster Trap Buoy Tree.  Buoys will be on display throughout the Holiday season, and then they'll be auctioned off in January at Art Haven's Annual Buoy Auction Fundraiser!

Fall Festival at White-Ellery House

A Day of Art, Music and Demonstrations at Historic White-Ellery House

The historic White-Ellery House will serve as the backdrop for the Cape Ann Museum’s fall festival. Historic demonstrations include decoy carving with Bob Brophy; needlepoint design with Carol Karlson; traditional rug making with Rose Ann Hunter; hand woven design with Sara Wright; and wool spinning with Leslie Wind. Children will have a chance to try their hand at making spoon dolls and other traditional toys and games.

Family Fun Free Day

The second Saturday of every month is free for families with school-aged children. Families are invited to the Activity Center to participate in art, history, and cultural activities, and explore the museum using a Seek and Find. Each month has a different theme, from exhibitions to special celebrations. With September 2013's theme 'Four Winds' families are invited to the Children's Activity Center to participate in themed art, history and cultural activities that explores the Gloucester's Rocky Neck Art Colony, its artists and sculptors. This program is free and open to the public.

Family Collagraphy Printmaking Project

Participants will crerate collograph 'blocks' used for printing on textiles

Camilla MacFadyen is back at Maritime Gloucester to produce another community art project using collography print making techniques! Families are invited to a three day workshop, where participants will create textile prints and printed silk fish to be used in the construction of an environmental art piece on the docks for public viewing during the Gloucester Schooner Festival 2024! This years' planned project will result in an environmental art piece that will consisit o f a series of floor-to-ceiling 'sails' on display at the Maritime Gloucester Boat Shop.
