Hands on History

Every weekend there's hands-on history programs at The House of the Seven Gables in Salem Massachusetts

Each weekend in July and August the House of 7 Gables invites young (and young at heart!) guests to explore different elements of colonial life through hands-on activities. These drop-in programs will run 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. Saturdays and Sundays and are free with the purchase of admission. This summer, we will be exploring traditional children’s games and the art of calligraphy. Stop in for some hands-on fun!

Nature Fractals with Mixed Media at PEM

Come experiment with mixed media and stenciling based on the natural phenomenon of fractals.

Come experiment with mixed media and stenciling based on the natural phenomenon of fractals. A fractal is a pattern in nature that repeats at different scales. If you look closely at nature, you’ll see fractals in everything from snowflakes and seashells to broccoli and branching lightning bolts!

Salem Muster on the Common

First Muster 1637 Reenactment - Salem Muster Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company Muster Parade and Ceremony on the Salem MA Common

One of the most exciting events in Salem is the Anniversary of the Country's First Muster! Watch the reenactment unfold in Salem Common! The AHAC participates in the parade and ceremony commemorating the Anniversary of the country's first muster in 1637 in Salem Massachusetts. Salem is the birthplace of National Guard. Many members of the Ancients have served or are currently serving in the Guard. Participants include Massachusetts National Guard, Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, Salem Trayned Band, 2nd Corpos Veterans Group, and other historic military companies.

Children's Costume Halloween Party

Come to Rockafellas in Salem for a kids' Halloween Costume Party!

Rockafellas Salem is having a party for the kids this Halloween season! Put on a costume and bring your kids to the fun in the Colonial Hall.  There will be a DJ spinning some great music and providing entertainment, fun games, activities and costume contests! Snack and beverages will be served, and all children who attend will receive a goodie bag!

War of 1812 Bicentennial

Come to Salem Maritime to celebrate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812!

War of 1812 Day at Salem Maritime National Historic Site! Salem Maritime will be celebrating the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 with living history programming throughout the day. Meet some of Salem's 19th century citizens, and hear their views on this controversial war. Family activities and Junior Ranger programs will be offered all day.

National Park Junior Ranger Day

Become a Junior Ranger at Salem Maritime or Saugus Iron Works!

Junior Ranger Day is part of National Park Week and is geared toward engaging kids to learn history, teach them stewardship and have fun while exploring their nearby National Parks.  On the North Shore, families can visit Salem Maritime National Historic Site or Salem Sound Coastwatch for free fun activities throughout the day!

Sailor Crafts and Activities

Kids will learn Maritime History through activities and crafts in Salem Massachusetts!

Come to the Salem Maritime National Historic Visitor Center to imagine what life was like at sea as you rummage through the sea bags of a ship’s boy, a sailor, and a captain. Try writing your name using signal flags used to send messages at sea. Then, make a Sailor Valentine out of sea shells like the ones sailors would create for their loved ones back home.

The Salem Generation Games for all ages at Salem State University in Salem Massachusetts

The Generation Games is about people of all ages having a good time playing sports and games together. Playing together has been found to not only promote a healthier society but also helps create understanding. Play is a great equalizer - it doesn’t matter who or what you are, where you come from, or how much money you make. It just matters that you are having fun and learning from the experience. The motto of the Generation Games is “by generations, for generations.” It has a focus on recreation and sport for all, health, education and social issues. Any city can make use of the creative concept: it is shared with cities worldwide. The Generation Games is all about community engagement and international connectivity.
