Bundle up and join the Trustees at Crane Beach in Ipswich for a chance to learn to identify the constellations of Spring! At this time of year there are no fewer than ten first-magnitude (really bright!) stars in the evening sky at once. No other season, not even winter, can offer so many. We’ll set up our viewing station on the boardwalk at Crane Beach to gaze at the more common clusters such as the Big Dipper, and also at those we might not be familiar with, including the zodiacal constellations Leo the Lion and Virgo the Maiden. We will have a couple of telescopes to share, but folks are welcome and encouraged to bring their own.
Excited for Rogue One? Love all things Star Wars? Then this is the party for you! Come join us as we play Star Wars themed games, take turns trying out our Star Wars games on the Wii, eat some Star Wars themed food, and of course talk about our favorite (and not-so-favorite) moments in Star Wars to date.
Santa will be the star of this Polar Express themed party! Santa will be available for consultation or just for viewing from across the room. It is a low-pressure Santa opportunity and especially for children who visit the library frequently, a comfortable one. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ipswich Public Library. It is free and no registration is required. Holiday crafts and snacks will be offered.
Nature's riches abound during this festive time of year. Sample delicious homemade treats made with local beach plums and cranberries. Inhale the aroma of white pine tea or a bayberry candle. Boldly bite into a seaweed salad or nibble on some pickleweed.
Join the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club for an evening of stargazing at Maudslay State Park. The night sky is spectacular when you can view it from the middle of a state park, where our street lights don’t spoil the view! Maudslay State Park teams up with the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club to highlight the spectacular night sky.
Don your wings and wands and come to a Fairy Party in the Garden at the Crane Estate. The Trustees welcome children of all ages to an afternoon of hunting treasure, fairy stories and songs, and create a potted fairy garden to take home. Lemonade and cookies will be served.
Tickets are $12/Member child and $20/Nonmember child. Accompanying adults are free. Advance tickets available at www.thetrustees.org.
Families and Teens: Spend your half-day at the movies! Come watch "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" PG-13 (136 minutes) in the Program Room. Snacks will be provided! Please note this film is rated PG-13. Please contact Sara, Teen Services Librarian. Sponsored by the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library.
The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art will be offering workshops for children and adults to kick-off the new Cape Ann Reads initiative. This program will take place at the Cape Ann Museum and is free and open to the public. Space is limited; reservations are required.
Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary hosts a wonderful program for preschoolers! These walks are offered as individual classes. Join us for one or more of these winter explorations. We'll read by Jan Brett and then take a hike to look for animal homes in the sanctuary. Using a very large mitten, we will recreate the story. As a group, we'll build a people shelter and see how warm we can make it.
