War of 1812 Day at Salem Maritime National Historic Site! Salem Maritime will be celebrating the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 with living history programming throughout the day. Meet some of Salem's 19th century citizens, and hear their views on this controversial war. Family activities and Junior Ranger programs will be offered all day.

Create a family treasure by making your own Russian nested doll, matryoshka, with Russian artist and storyteller, Marina Forbes. While decorating the dolls, families can listen to the folk music from Russia and try the “matryoshka dance”. Adults, teens and children six and up are invited to this workshop on traditional Russian arts and crafts.

Hundreds of models ships of all types will be on display in downtown Peabody! There will be all types, made from wood, plastic paper and miscellaneous media and created by hobbyists and professionals from the Greater Boston area.  Many of these models are incredibly detailed works of art worthy of museum display.  Come see these wonderful pieces and meet the people who make them!  You'll learn about their skills and hear some great stories, and its a great time for all visitors. Please use the side entrance to the building.

Join the Salem Maritime National Historic Site and Dr. Calvin Mires, Co-Founder and Instructor of Seafaring Education and Maritime Archaeological Heritage Program (SEAMAHP) in bringing maritime heritage to life through hands-on activities. Although we won't actually be practicing archaeology, visitors young and old will have the opportunity to use the tools and methods of archaeological research, survey and documentation.
