Explore the FRIENDSHIP OF SALEM, a replica tall ship based on a 1796 Salem vessel at Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Learn about the voyages of the original FRIENDSHIP and the lives of the crewmembers onboard. The two-decked, three-masted, square-rigged, 342-ton vessel represents New England’s influential role in the development of global and domestic maritime trade. Ongoing repair work is taking place on the FRIENDSHIP, so capacity limits are in place on deck.
The North Shore Concert Band will play a Family Concert “Sea Music” featuring music “from and about” the sea in the historic St. Peter’s Sanctuary. The band narrator will give short intros to the varied selections helping all to better understand the program. Before the music begins, a St. Peter’s Historian will give a brief historical timeline of the founding of this 1733 church and its history up to its service to our community today—the oldest church in Salem still worshipping on the site in which it was founded.
Come to Pioneer Village for a craft and storytelling event that shares tales of natural folklore and wild wisdom from around the world. These stories inspire an appreciation for different cultures as well as encourage engagement with the natural environment.
Join Salem Maritime National Historical Park at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center for an evening of local ghost stories to celebrate the opening of our newest exhibit, “The Ghosts We Work With: Preservation in the Historic Witch City”. Take in the views of this prominent building where Nathaniel Hawthorne once worked and the U.S. Custom Service operated. This Custom House was built in 1819 and housed offices for the officers of the U.S. Customs Service, as well as an attached warehouse, the Public Stores, used for the storage of bonded and impounded cargo.
This self-guided walking tour is designed to help explain the true history behind the Salem Witch Trials. After more than three centuries of storytelling through countless books, movies, and television shows, the line between historical fact and dramatic fiction has become increasingly blurred. Since much of Salem has changed drastically since 1692, very little remains with direct ties to these historical events. However, this tour will use the Heritage Trail as a guide and will point out original locations, help debunk persistent legends, and reveal the true history that has been obscured over the centuries.
Discover Salem’s Golden Age of Sail as you uncover clues! Celebrate America’s Maritime History! The Ladies of Salem will have you looking up at whimsical and beautifully designed figureheads gracing lampposts downtown. “What is a figurehead ?” you may ask? It’s a large carved wooden decorative three dimensional representation of a person, animal or mythical creature located at the bow (forward part) of a sailing ship. They were thought to bring good luck as the “eyes” of the ship. Each “Lady” has a unique story to tell. Just head to Destination Salem Visitors Center on Derby Street to pick up the scavenger hunt, and use QR codes to find the lady locations!
Explore the marine creatures that inhabit the tidepool on the rocky shore! Salem Sound Coastwatch staff will bring buckets, nets, and ID guides and help you identify what we find. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes (no open toes) that can get wet and traverse slippery rocks. Please meet at the Winter Island rain garden (look for the SSCW flag!) and let the gatehouse staff know you’re with us. All ages welcome. Event will be held rain or shine unless there is thunder or lightning. Part of Trails & Sails.
Come listen to some great music by two bands made up of Salem residents and others from Grade 7 through adult, under the direction of Cynthia Napierkowski, director of the Salem High School Band. Event takes place at the Salem High School Auditorium serving as a rain location.
